Benny's Story

Listen to this story:

Here is a story about a peer supporter, Benny.
He is a peer supporter for a new researcher, Malik.
In this story, Benny supports Malik’s personal and professional development.

Malik is new to the research team. Benny is a peer supporter on the research team. Benny’s boss asked him to help Malik with their professional development. Benny and Malik met to talk about the things Malik wanted to learn about research (a). Malik shared that he wanted to learn how to use computer programs. Benny agreed this was an important skill for a researcher. Benny asked Malik if there were other things he wanted to learn or do better, outside of his research job. Malik wasn’t sure, so Benny gave Malik a goal development worksheet (b). Malik spent one week filling out the worksheet, and then met with Benny. Malik shared that he wanted to learn how to take public transportation independently to work and the store. They came up with ideas together about how Malik could keep track of their progress towards the goals. They decided that he would keep a voice journal on a digital recorder and they would meet each week (c) to talk about how he was doing on his goals and new ideas to help him meet his goals.
