Here is a story about a peer supporter, Amir.
He is a peer supporter for a new researcher, Maya.
In this story, Amir supports Maya by creating a welcoming environment.

Maya is a new peer researcher on a large project that has many staff members. The head researcher on the team wants to create a welcoming environment for Maya. The head researcher asked Amir to work with Maya. Amir was excited to meet the new team member. But after the first team meeting, Maya looked worried. Amir asked Maya if anything was bothering her. Maya said, “This is so hard and the meeting was really confusing.” Amir validated Maya’s feelings, and said, “It was so confusing for me at first too!” (b) Maya sighed with relief. Amir then told Maya that everyone on the team was really nice and told Maya that she did a great job during the meeting (a) by asking questions. Amir told her that he believed that she would get better at her job every week. Maya agreed she would keep trying. At the next meeting, Amir celebrated Maya’s hard work (c) and told Maya “Wow, great job sharing at the meeting today!” Maya smiled with pride.
