Strategy 2: Experiences you have in common
You can notice the things that you have in common with peer researchers when you are doing research together. Sharing the things you have in common helps build friendships. All members of the research team feel like they belong when they have things in common with each other.
Example
Sheena was an experienced member of the research team. She became a peer supporter for Alex, a new member of the team. Sheena took Alex out for a cup of coffee so they could get to know each other.
Other ways you can get to know people:
- Play icebreaker games to get to know each other
- Talk about the type of sports, outings, or things they like to do with friends
- Meet one on one on Zoom, or connect in social media
- Go to the snack bar together on a break
- Go for a walk or visit a park
